“When the weather started getting bad, I was trying to do some interiors, the dressing table in my bedroom with the mirror and the window, the chair I always sit in in the living room and the lamp. …I was thinking of them as portraits without the people, but with the presence of a person there in the way the brushes and bottles were left on the dressing table and the way the chair was pulled up to the lamp. They could be almost more personal than a portrait, the way someone leaves something or does something being less self-conscious than their face sometimes.”
